The Warriors and Wizards will play two preseason games in Japan on Sept. 30 and Oct. 2, the NBA and Warriors announced Monday.
The pair of games taking place at Saitama Super Arena will be the Warriors’ first time playing in Japan and the first international games since 2017, where they played two games in China against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
“One of my favorite parts of the league is that we can go places like this,” Warriors general manager Bob Myers said. “The NBA or basketball has taken me all over the world, and every time I do it, I learn something about the culture.”
NBA Japan Games 2022 will be broadcast live on Japanese service NBA Rakuten – the Warriors have had a partnership with Rakuten since 2017. The Wizards’ connection to Japan is forward Rui Hachimura, the first Japanese player to be selected in the first round of the NBA. Disorganized.
“You walk into the NBA locker room and there are so many languages spoken, but the common language is basketball,” Wizards general manager Tommy Sheppard said.
These will be the 15th and 16th league games played in Japan, most recently in 2019 when the Rockets and Raptors played two preseason games there. The NBA played 12 regular season games in the country between 1990 and 2003.
The Warriors also played two games in China in 2013 against the Lakers and two games against the Bucks there in 2008.
