Chad Stahelski appreciated Donnie Yen’s years of experience

In John Wick 4, having Yen was advantageous due to his years of experience. He would give advice to Stahelski and, in the director’s opinion, was extraordinarily quick to understand what was expected of him. Despite being 59, Stahelski remarked that Yen was “still fast as shit,” which added a lot of excitement to the highly anticipated session with Reeves. He said working with the two of them was a strange experience. “So I stand in between. You’ve got Donnie Yen and you’ve got Keanu Reeves, and you’ve all been touching hands, blocking stuff. And you’re like, ‘Holy shit. These are really real. Stahelski was faced with the dilemma of whether to stage a battle that fans were clamoring for and whether to wrap up the John Wick series. He wondered, “How am I going to make this fucking movie?”

Stahelski concluded by promising that the fight scene between Reeves and Yen would be distinctive. Despite the fact that the director was familiar with some of Yen’s signature moves, he still wanted the fight to fit the John Wick universe and over-the-top action while relying on both stars’ acting skills:

So it always comes down to, I can do Donnie Yen’s triple kick. I can do all of that, but you also want to do something different. So you start to sit down, you get there from the character, and you have a lot of discussions with the guys saying, ‘Okay, Donnie is amazing at this. Keanu is amazing in this area. They’re both great actors, so let’s build on that and do something we’ve never seen before. So now this Donnie Yen with a sword and a gun and Keanu with a samurai sword and some guns and throwing an AR-15 and a glass mirror room with Japanese artifacts. And yes, add some dogs and see what happens.
